Hi, I’m Celeste, a chef and the founder of Women Weave Baskets. My love for these baskets started during a grocery trip in Los Angeles.
I saw a stack of bright, hand-woven Bolga baskets. I started using one as my everyday shopping tote, and people repeatedly stopped me to ask, “Where did you get that?” Curiosity turned into research, which turned into relationships with the artisans who make them and then into this store.
What we do
We curate and sell authentic hand-woven baskets from Bolgatanga, Ghana. Each piece is made from natural elephant grass.
Some pieces use hand-dyed fibers, recycled materials and other natural materials. They finish with leather or vegan handles. No two baskets are identical, the colors, patterns, and weave vary because each is handcrafted.
Why it matters
Every basket combines beauty and a wide range of usefulness. They are great for shopping, as storage baskets, picnics, and home décor. Baskets also help replace single-use plastics in daily life.
More importantly: when you buy from Women Weave Baskets you’re supporting women artisans and helping preserve traditional craft.
Pro tip: choose “Multicolor” if you love surprises! Patterns and color schemes vary with each artisan piece.
Materials & craftsmanship
Our baskets are woven in different shapes and sizes from sustainable elephant grass and finished with leather or recycled rubber handles (vegan options available). Some trims use organic dyes or cloth details sourced locally in Ghana. We inspect each piece for quality before it ships. We cannot guarantee an exact color match or pattern match for most of our styles because each item is handmade.
How they’re made
Each Bolga basket is woven on a simple set of hand tools using techniques passed down through generations.
The process can take hours and requires skilled hands to create the tight, durable weave our customers expect. Small variations and slight asymmetries are part of the charm, they’re proof the basket is truly handmade, not mass produced.
Care & use
To keep your woven shopping tote or woven fruit basket looking its best, avoid prolonged sun exposure and damp storage. Gently reshape and air dry if it gets wet. For light dirt, brush or spot-clean with a damp cloth. There's no need to use any cleaning products other than a mild soap if needed.
These small care steps extend the life of the basket and keep the natural fibers strong.
How your purchase helps
Proceeds go back to the weaving communities to support health, education, and small business opportunities.
