Five Summer Essentials I Can’t Live Without

Posted by Maria Gross on

There’s something about summer that feels lighter—like the world slows down just enough to savor a picnic under a tree, wander through the farmers’ market with sun-warmed peaches in hand, or ride a bike at golden hour.

This year I found myself reaching for the same five things again and again, my summer essentials. The beautiful part? They all came from Women Weave Baskets, where color, craftsmanship, and social impact come together.

1. The Classic Shopping Basket

This is hands-down my favorite. It’s my go-to for farmers’ markets, beach days, and impromptu picnics. Hand-woven from sustainable elephant grass (some styles include recycled fibers), it’s sturdy yet elegant.

Every time I bring it out, someone asks where I got it and I love sharing that it was hand-woven by women artisans in Bolgatanga, Ghana.

No two are the same, so carrying one feels like carrying a little piece of art and story.

2. My Duo of Summer Hats

I always have options. The wide-brim sun hat is perfect for long beach days and gardening; it provides sun protection and the material is very breathable. The everyday straw fedora is my errands-and-coffee hat, lightweight, packed with personality, and handmade with care.

Both styles are breathable, packable, and made with the same artisan attention to detail as our baskets. On a hot day, wearing one is always a good idea.

3. The Hand-Woven Fan

Summer heat can sneak up on you, and these woven fans are both practical and stunning. I tuck one in my bag for outdoor concerts, backyard BBQs, and afternoons at the market. Each fan is a tiny masterpiece colorful, compact, and durable, so it’s as much a style piece as a cooling tool.

4. The Bicycle Basket

This one makes every ride feel cinematic. I clip it to my bike and suddenly errands turn into a slow-motion summer scene: fresh bread, flowers, and a jar of lemonade fit perfectly.

When it’s off the bike, it becomes a charming high quality storage basket at home, double duty and endlessly useful.

5. The Gift That Keeps on Giving

Not a single physical item, but the reason I keep returning: every purchase supports women weavers and their communities. Proceeds help create economic opportunities, and every handmade piece helps preserve traditional craft. Knowing my summer essentials also help someone else makes them that much sweeter.

Why Women Weave Baskets?

I fell for the beauty and functionality of these pieces, but I keep coming back for the mission. Each hand woven basket, fan, and hat tells a story of craft, care, and empowerment.

If you want a summer that’s more intentional, more colorful, and more connected, start here—one basket at a time.
